Ben Long never intended to practice forensic psychology again after his sudden retirement from the District Attorney’s office four years ago. His friend Sidney Kingsley, the new DA, had other plans.

Junior Torrence has been charged with murdering his brother’s fiancee, Amber Coolidge. His attorney, the same man who had years earlier had defended the man who killed Ben Long’s mother, has hired a psychologist to prove Torrence is mentally handicapped and therefore ineligible for a capital trial. Kingsley wants Long to do a separate evaluation. At first Long refuses, but then relents when a tragedy befalls one of his college students.

Kingsley assigns a law clerk, Paula Paige, to assist Long in his evaluation. She finds Long quirky, distant, and a little frightening, until Kingsley explains that — -besides being brilliant — -Long has been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a type of high-functioning Autism.

As they conduct the psychological evaluation, Paula finds that she must adjust to Long’s unorthodox — -and in some cases — -bizarre practices. Worse, even as the evaluation brings Torrence’s competency to stand trial in question, they begin to question whether he was even capable of commiting the crime! Have the police arrested the wrong man? And, if so, who did kill Amber Coolidge?
